Bonjour!

¡Hola!

Guten Tag!

The adventure of language learning begins in Year One, where children are introduced to both French and Spanish through games, activities and songs. This continues with weekly lessons in both languages as they move into Year Two.

In the Juniors, the acquisition of language and understanding of cultures is developed further. From Year Three, French and Spanish are taught through interactive activities, digital stories, role play and games that enable children to enjoy the language and feel comfortable practising their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. From Year Four, children have the opportunity to become Language Ambassadors; those who earn the privilege promote the subject throughout the school, whilst encouraging and supporting their peers in their linguistic development. There is a reward system that allows one class the opportunity to enjoy a European breakfast each term, so long as they order their food and drink in a foreign language!

Extra-curricular language learning is also popular. Everybody in Key Stage Two has the opportunity to take part in an optional weekly French club, where they can explore cooking, food tasting, sports, and more. A select group of children in Year Six take part each week in an introductory German club.

Our children develop the confidence, skills and enthusiasm that will enable them to continue their language learning into Senior School and beyond.
